Marlena Stall of Houston, Texas was featured on CNN regarding an experience she alleged of a doctor forcing her to carry her dead fetus for two weeks due to Texas Heartbeat Act, Senate Bill 8 (SB 8) which passed last year on September 1st. Only, Marlena’s story was missing some crucial questions like: If Marlena’s fetus was ‘unviable with no heart beat’ why would she be forced to carry for two weeks? The laws in Texas do not say that a doctor will have a “ten thousand dollar bounty on their heads’ as Marlena claimed for the reason why her doctor refused to give her a D&C once finding out the fetus no longer had a heartbeat?
Many people online were quick to question the narrative that CNN was pitching to the public. The Blaze’s Sara Gonzales pointed out that either the Doctor was ill informed, or that Marlena was being dishonest about the events which unfolded.
I was able to reach out to Marlena Stall to inquire as to why she chose to protect the Doctor from prosecution for committing medical malpractice by forcing her to carry a dead fetus for two weeks. Which in turn, could have led to Marlena being infected with Sepsis (deadly blood infection). I know personally, I would have gone scorched earth on a doctor if I was force to carry a dead fetus for two weeks defying laws. There is nowhere in SB-8 that states that a doctor cannot perform a D&C for a women who’s baby has died in utero. The most concerning facet of this story is, that this doctor is still practicing medicine without the common knowledge they can in fact perform a D&C to a dead fetus. Imagine if they do this to another pregnant women?
Another facet of this story which has incited more probe, is why would Marlena’s husband allow his wife to carry a dead fetus for two whole weeks? Why would a husband not take her to a different hospital, seek another opinion? Marlena did say she was “discouraged from reaching out to another doctor because she was turned down by ten doctors prior due to her pregnancy being ‘high risk’” Though, when your life is being put into danger, naturally you would go into fight mode and find a way to survive. Why didn’t they go to a different hospital, and even after there was detection of no heartbeat after the 2nd ultrasound why was Marlena denied a D&C?
Sadly whether STELL is telling the truth is moot. She cast further murkiness onto an already volatile issue, as I have pointed out, and has not done anything substantive to protect other women. How can we prevent this stuff when Stell won't say where it happened?
The claim that Marlena makes that there are $10k bounties on Doctors to perform a D&C is just factually untrue, and it was shoddy reporting for CNN not to fact check. Though, it is CNN so the standards are quite low here.
