Colin Allred Exits Texas Senate Race, Shifts to Congressional BiD
In a stunning late-hour pivot, former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred announced on Monday that he is withdrawing from the Democratic primary for Texas’ U.S. Senate seat and will instead seek election to the newly redrawn 33rd Congressional District in Dallas. The decision, revealed on the final day for candidates to file for the March 3, 2026 primaries, aims to unify the Democratic Party ahead of a high-stakes general election against Republican incumbents.
“In the past few days, I’ve come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers—Paxton, Cornyn, or Hunt,” Allred stated on X, referencing Paxton, Cornyn, and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt as potential GOP contenders.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court greenlit the Republican-led Legislature’s mid-decade redistricting, which reshaped House maps to favor GOP incumbents. The new 33rd District incorporates about a third of Allred’s former 32nd District—the suburban Dallas seat he flipped from Republican control in 2018 and held for three terms. Now, Allred faces a primary showdown with his successor, Rep. Julie Johnson, who is relocating from the neighboring 32nd District.
By stepping aside, Allred clears a path for Crockett, the outspoken Dallas congresswoman known for her viral clashes during congressional hearings, to consolidate support without fracturing the party’s resources.
