David Cook has announced his candidacy for Speaker of the Texas House, challenging the incumbent Dade Phelan. His campaign emphasizes a commitment to unity within the Republican caucus, transparency, and a shift in leadership style, particularly highlighting issues like the appointment of committee chairs and the handling of controversial legislative matters like school vouchers and the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton.
David Cook was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in November 2020, representing District 96, which includes parts of Tarrant County. He assumed office in January 2021. Prior to this, he served as the mayor of Mansfield, Texas, from May 2008 until January 2021. His political journey reflects a strong commitment to public service, initially at the local level and now at the state level. Before entering politics, Cook worked in the legal field, eventually becoming a managing partner at Harris Cook L.L.P., a law firm he co-founded with the late State Senator Chris Harris.
In the Texas House, Cook has been involved in significant roles, including serving as Vice Chairman of the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee during the 88th Session. He's also a member of various committees and caucuses, indicating his active participation in legislative activities.
