Conservative activist Mark McCaig filed a Texas Ethics Commission complaint on August 19, 2025, against Rep. Gene Wu (D-Houston), alleging a violation of election laws. The complaint claims Wu or his team used the Texas House floor—a restricted, public-funded space—to stream a video on August 18, 2025, encouraging support for Rep. Nicole Collier and linking to her fundraising site, NicoleCollier.com.
McCaig argues the livestream, posted on the Texas House Democratic Caucus’s social media, broke Texas Election Code Section 255.003(a) by using public resources for political advertising. The stream allegedly directed viewers to donate via ActBlue, hosted on Collier’s site. A mentioned link to Redistricting.com appears unrelated, promoting software instead.
The complaint follows a Democratic walkout over redistricting, with Wu as caucus chair. Gov. Greg Abbott has sued to remove Wu for abandoning duties, amid ongoing partisan clashes.
The Ethics Commission will review the case. If upheld, Wu could face fines or prosecution. No response has come from Wu yet, but this could escalate tensions in Texas’s special session.
