FEMA Warns it is Running Out of Money Before Hurricane Season
FEMA, the US government agency responsible for assisting those impacted by disasters in the United States, has warned that they could run out of funds during the hurricane season. According to a recent report released by FEMA, the agency could be short $6.8 billion by September, the peak of the hurricane season along the Gulf & East Coast. This report notably differs from a March news release in which FEMA said it had enough funds to make it through the year. Despite that initial assessment, unanticipated natural disasters from then to now have cost billions of dollars, money the agency wasn't projecting to shell out. In a statement, a FEMA spokesperson said there were ongoing talks with Congress to secure additional funds. The spokesperson warned "Without additional funding, FEMA will take steps prior to funding exhaustion to ensure resources are available to support ongoing lifesaving and life sustaining activities." This news comes as the US is bracing for what many meteorologists say could be one of the most active hurricane seasons on record.
