The indigent legal budget for Harris County has seen significant increases in recent years. In 2024, the budget for indigent defense was reported to be $120 million, which is a notable increase from the $60 million it was in 2020. This increase has been attributed to various factors, including increased costs associated with providing legal representation to those who cannot afford their own attorneys, a surge in case numbers, and policy choices aimed at enhancing the quality of indigent defense services.
in 2018 the county paid these court-appointed attorneys $60 million. Almost 100 of them earned more than $200,000 each, and most had extraordinarily high caseloads, state data show. Meanwhile, public defenders in the county make an average annual salary of $115,000
Why is the County underfunding the District Attorneys office and paying private attorneys large sums of taxpayer dollars for indigent defense? Something isn’t adding up here, is it? The increase we all know has to do with the border being wide open, and how Harris County has become a safe haven for criminal and cartel activity.
Currently, with the Jocelyn Nungaray case, the county has appointed nine attorneys to the case to defend the alleged murderers and rapists
