Houston has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the U.S. when compared to cities of similar size. This includes crimes like murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The city's violent crime rate has shown fluctuations, with recent years indicating a trend towards stabilization or reduction in some categories, although there was a noted increase in violent crime in 2022 by about 4.5% according to some reports.

Property crimes such as burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft are also significant in Houston. The rate of property crime has been described as very high compared to other cities. For instance, the chance of becoming a victim of property crime in Houston is notably high, with specific mention of motor vehicle theft being prevalent.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) has come under scrutiny for having 264,000 criminal incident reports that were suspended due to a lack of personnel over an eight-year period. These suspended cases included various types of crimes, from violent crimes like sexual assaults (over 4,000 cases) to property crimes. Even within the homicide division, over 6,500 reports were dismissed, but these were mostly related to non-fatal assaults and threats before 2018.
