A new poll shows a tightening race between Ted Cruz and Colin Allred for Texas' US Senate seat. Cruz leads Allred by just over one percentage point, 48.3 percent to 46.8 percent, according to the poll from Emerson College Polling.
The poll was conducted on Oct. 18-21 spoke to 815 likely voters and had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
The debate between Allred and Cruz highlighted sharp contrasts in policy, particularly on issues like abortion, border security, and transgender athletes in sports. Allred criticized Cruz for his stance on abortion, suggesting Cruz's policies were not pro-life when considering cases of rape or health complications. Cruz attacked Allred on his policies regarding transgender athletes, claiming they could lead to unfair sports competitions.
Earlier in the campaign cycle, Allred had significantly outraised Cruz in campaign funds in the third quarter at $30.3 million to Cruz’s by $21 million for the third quarter, which might indicate strong support or at least a strong push to challenge Cruz effectively.
As of right now, there has been a strong turnout in Democrat stronghold counties for early voting, which could turn the race in Allred’s favor. The early voting period has shown a marked increase in participation compared to past elections, with specific mention of record turnouts in counties like Tarrant, Harris, Bexar, and Travis, which are significant due to their size and political inclinations.
