Several restaurants in the Houston-Galveston area have filed a class action lawsuit against CenterPoint Energy, alleging negligence, gross negligence, and other legal violations.
More than 2.6 million customers and businesses were left without power for several days after Hurricane Beryl hit Southeast Texas on July 8.
The case also alleges that CenterPoint Energy failed to do the following:
Failed for years to invest in infrastructure
Failed to adequately inspect, maintain, and upgrade equipment
Failed to adequately train its personnel
Failed to have a competent storm plan in place
Failed to adequately respond to the storm once it impacted the area
CenterPoint Energy, amid the legal firestorm, has yet to issue a public response to the filed complaint. The heart of the lawsuit revolves around a narrative of failure and frustration — failure on the part of the utility company to prepare for and respond to the natural disaster effectively, and frustration on the side of the restaurant owners, who contend that enduring power outages have significantly hampered their business operations.
